Players will start with only a few of the game’s vehicles in their collection and they can unlock more over time. Some of the game’s vehicles, like the ‘71 El Camino and the Ram 1500 Rebel, are realistic, while others, like the Bump Around (a bumper car from an amusement park) are more imaginary but still just as fun to collect (or maybe even more so). Hot Wheels Unleashed offers 66 Hot Wheels vehicles to collect at launch, and more will be released as downloadable content in the future. At the same time, the easiest difficulty setting allowed us to leave our opponents in the dust, which means it should be a good option for younger kids or newcomers to the racing genre (though, this setting may actually be too easy). Even on the medium setting, players may find it difficult to win every race as the computer puts up quite a fight. Hot Wheels Unleashed offers multiple difficulty settings that change the skills of the game’s computer-controlled opponents. If you find yourself in trouble, the game features a quick reset button that allows players to get back into the action (each track also has a series of checkpoints). Rather than having invisible walls at the side of the track, vehicles are allowed to accidentally (or purposefully) leave the track, to land outside of the track after performing a jump, and so on. Tracks are made up of classic Hot Wheels pieces, including loops and ramps - there’s even an animated spider that tosses sticky webs onto the track. As players drift around corners, they’ll charge their vehicle’s boost ability, and this boost ability will also recharge automatically over time. The racing gameplay is fast-paced, with a focus on drifting around tight corners and boosting to temporarily gain extra speed. ![]() Since the game’s vehicles are Hot Wheels “toys” (not full-sized vehicles), the race tracks and vehicles will appear as small items in each environment, with furniture and more appearing as huge objects all around each track. How Wheels Unleashed features six gameplay environments, like a skyscraper and a skate park, which each have multiple tracks to choose from. They can share liveries with other players and download liveries created by others. Livery Editor – Players can create a custom look for each vehicle by choosing from different paint colors, materials, and more.Track Builder – A robust track editor that allows players to create and share their own race tracks. If players create a custom track in the Basement environment and then share that track, other players will be able to see the customizations they’ve made to the Basement area. Basement – An environment editor that allows players to customize the look of the game’s “Basement” environment, which is where several race tracks are set. ![]() Multiplayer – Compete against other players online in races for up to 12 players.Split Screen – A multiplayer mode for two people in the same room who will play on the same screen. Time Attack – Choose a location, track, and vehicle and complete a lap as quickly as you can.Quick Race – Choose a location, track, and vehicle and compete in a single race against computer-controlled opponents. ![]() We’ll talk more about this mode in a bit. Hot Wheels City Rumble – This is the game’s career mode, which challenges players to defeat five monsters that are terrorizing Hot Wheels City. Here’s a brief overview of these options: Hot Wheels Unleashed features five different racing modes, as well as an environment editor, livery editor, and track creator. Hot Wheels Unleashed is an arcade-style racing game that allows players to collect dozens of Hot Wheels vehicles and put their racing skills to the test in multiple gameplay modes, including a career mode, multiplayer races, time trials, and more. We had the chance to check out the PlayStation 4 version of the game (we played it on PlayStation 5 through the console’s backwards compatibility functionality). Hot Wheels Unleashed races onto consoles and PC on September 30, 2021.

How do you know if you have the newest version of the Mavericks installer? The easiest approach is to look at the Information box on the Mavericks page on the Mac App Store-specifically, check the date next to Updated (or Released, as the case may be immediately after the initial release). So if you create an install drive and later download an updated version of the Mavericks installer, you’ll want to erase that install drive and recreate it using the new installer. Similarly, any bootable Mavericks install drive you create will not be updated to the latest installer version automatically. (If the Mac App Store won’t let you redownload the installer, quit the Mac App Store app, relaunch it, and then Option+click the Purchases tab in the toolbar that should show the Download button next to Mavericks in the Purchases list.) If you’ve got an older version of the installer and you want the latest version, you must delete your current copy of the installer and then redownload the Mavericks installer from the Mac App Store. However, unlike with other Mac App Store-purchased software, the Mac App Store does not update the copy of the Mavericks installer app sitting on your hard drive. Obviously, then, you want to create your bootable install drive using the latest version of the Mavericks installer. ![]() ![]() Using the latest installer for your bootable install drive is convenient, because it means that if you ever need to reinstall Mavericks, you won’t have to install 10.9.0 and then immediately install the latest big update. ![]() For example, when the inevitable 10.9.1 update is released, a few days later the Mac App Store will begin providing an updated Mavericks installer that installs 10.9.1 right off the bat. However, Apple regularly updates the OS X installers it makes available for download from the Mac App Store. A bootable install drive you create from that installer will install OS X 10.9.0. For example, if you downloaded OS X 10.9 on the day Mavericks was released, you downloaded the 10.9. What? You didn’t even realize that there are different versions of the installer? It turns out that when you download an OS X installer from the Mac App Store, that copy of the installer contains whatever version of OS X was available at the time of download. Get the latest version of the Mavericks installerīefore you make a bootable install drive, you should make sure you have the latest version of the Mavericks installer. Also, if you need to reinstall Mavericks, recovery mode requires you to download the entire 5.3GB installer again.) Finally, if you need to install Mavericks over Leopard-assuming you have the license to do so-a bootable install drive makes that process easier. (The OS X Recovery feature is a big help here, but not all Macs have it-and if your Mac’s drive is itself having trouble, recovery mode may not even be available. Also, if your Mac is experiencing problems, a bootable install drive makes a handy emergency disk. ![]() But there are a good number of reasons you might want a bootable Mavericks installer on an external hard drive or a thumb drive (USB stick).įor example, if you want to install Mavericks on multiple Macs, using a bootable install drive can be more convenient than downloading or copying the entire installer to each computer. Instead, it’s available only as an installer app downloadable from the Mac App Store, and that installer doesn’t require a bootable installation disc. Mavericks (OS X 10.9) doesn’t ship on a disc. What’s the difference between Amazon Music and Amazon Music Unlimited? Amazon Music is ad-free with unlimited skips and rewinds with availability for offline playback, while it’s big brother, Amazon Music Unlimited is $7.99 a month for Prime members and $9.99 a month without a Prime membership. This comes in handy when you’re out and about – but be warned that only downloaded tracks will play data-free, so make sure you’ve downloaded all the songs you want before you set out! Do you get Amazon Music for free with Amazon Prime?Īmazon Music is a benefit included in your Prime membership at no extra cost and features more than two million songs from 2000+ playlists and stations. Given the modern social reliance on software, program verification holds growing importance. In order to understand the development of Separation Logic, we first introduce the problem it is designed to solve. This contribution opens up the tools of Separation Logic for use by philosophers in other areas of inquiry. Finally, we accessibly introduce the details of Separation Logic and how it differs from other logical systems with which analytically minded philosophers are usually aware. This contribution opens up this technical work for further study by the philosophy of technology and science and technology study communities. Secondly, an accessible introduction to the practical uses of Separation Logic as a program verification tool. First, our observation that the logical and engineering models can be productively merged as an explanation for success of formal systems. We intend this account to make three main contributions. These tools range from ‘proof assistants’ that are used by humans to develop detailed correctness arguments about pieces of software to automatic software analysis tools that provide pragmatic and usable advice to software engineers at the time of development. Secondly, the proof theory developed to check software using Separation Logic is based on rules for scaling the reasoning task and has been deployed in numerous tools for formal reasoning about programs. This feature mirrors in some ways the dual abstract-physical nature of computer code in general (Turner and Angius 2017). First, it merges with the scientific-engineering model the programmer uses to understand and build the software. We present two main reasons why Separation Logic works. Footnote 1 We focus on the current form of Separation Logic (for an account of its development history, see O’Hearn ( 2015) and Calcagno et al. We will lay out what makes reasoning about computer resources hard and explain Separation Logic’s special arrangement of properties that enable us to use it effectively in program verification problems. Separation Logic adds a connective to standard logic called ‘and, separately’ that solves a problem of reasoning about the resources a computer program will need when it executes. For philosophers of science, it is an account of the working and reasoning process of field which is not commonly studied. Integrating with model or proof theory alone is not enough. ![]() ![]() For logicians, it is an example of success by integrating engineering needs into both model theory and proof theory. The result is a case study with multiple uses. Specifically, we follow Separation Logic, a development within theoretical computer science firmly established by O’Hearn and Pym ( 1999), Ishtiaq and O’Hearn ( 2001), and Reynolds ( 2002). This paper focuses on logic as a technology by reflecting on the achievements in verification of computer programs using logics as tools. We provide three contributions: an exploration of the extent of models merging that is necessary for success in computer science an introduction to the technical details of Separation Logic, which can be used for reasoning about other exhaustible resources and an introduction to (a subset of) the problems, process, and results of computer scientists for those outside the field. Furthermore, the history of Separation Logic for analysing programs provides a novel case for philosophers of science of how software engineers and computer scientists develop models and the components of such models. Seeking this intersection of two different senses of model provides a strategy for how computer scientists and logicians may be successful. ![]() When this occurs, both the logic and engineering benefit greatly. For these two senses of model-the engineering/conceptual and the logical-to merge in a genuine sense, each must maintain their norms of use from their home disciplines. Separation Logic is an interesting case because of its widespread success in verification tools. Scalability is a central problem, and some would even say the central problem, in appli- cations of logic in computer science. Separation Logic works because it merges the software engineer’s conceptual model of a program’s manipulation of computer memory with the logical model that interprets what sentences in the logic are true, and because it has a proof theory which aids in the crucial problem of scaling the reasoning task. Through the case of the history of Separation Logic, we explore how this assertion is more than idle poetry. One might poetically muse that computers have the essence both of logic and machines. ![]() Maybe this evidences a continuing significance as a navigation aid. ![]() Again, Hole in the Rock is the only place on Great Abaco that is marked. The southern end of Florida looks worryingly fragmented…įor the new century, a map by George Cook dated 1800 shows the first appearance of Little Abaco as a separate entity. John Blair’s map of 1779, below, shows clearly ‘the Hole in the Rock’ – indeed, it is the only named place on Great Abaco. Little Harbour – ‘Petit Havre’ – is again included as a distinct settlement, and a few Cays are also named. The Cartographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, in a 1764 map, also used the french name, though in the plural ‘Trou dans les Roches’, as this much enlarged portion of his ‘Cartes des Isles Lucayes’ shows. Many more settlements are shown, especially on the Cays. The French name is not just because the map maker was French, but probably because it was the name given by French settlers who are believed to have lived in that part of Abaco in the c18 (and quite possibly earlier). You’ll have to trust me on this – the writing is tiny and impossible to enlarge legibly. Little Harbour is mentioned, as are 2 ‘Keys’, presumably indicating settlements.Ī 1750 map by Robert of Paris shows the southern tip of Abaco as ‘Trou dans le Roc’. ‘Abaco’ is now spelled as we know it, with ‘Hole in the Rock’ clearly marked. The relationship of the islands to each other is shown in geographic reality and many more details and place names are included. The earliest specific reference to Hole-in-the-Wall (as it now is) that I have so far found is in a 1738 map by Johannes Couvens & Cornelius Mortier. Things become much clearer and more detailed in the c18. ![]() This famous map by A.M.Mallet from 1683, with its enjoyable sea battle vignette, is another good example of the very general nature of the maps, although the design and draftsmanship has advanced considerably This colourful and charming 1679 map shows that a very basic style of mapping was still common in the c17 I have also included an image of the whole map so that the extraordinary range and complexity of this early map can be seen in its entirety. The first image is a detail of the whole map, showing the Bahamas, a sea monster, and a graphic shipwreck. His incredibly intricate map, for the period, is decorated with volcanos, mermaids, monkeys, and variety of fantastical sea creatures. It is quite hard – near impossible – to relate the position of ‘Haraco’ to the other islands depicted.ĪDDENDUM I have now uncovered an even earlier and far more ambitious map published in 1550 by the Spanish cartographer Diego Gutiérrez. The earliest map I have so far found is the Abraham Ortelius map of 1592, which is a good example of the rather basic map-making of the time. The gradual development of settlements can also been seen – at Little Harbour, Crossing Rocks and ‘Cheeric Sound’, for example, as well as on the ‘Keys’. Over the course of 5 centuries, one can trace the progress of place names to those used today – including of Abaco itself. The islands mostly have quite different names, or variants of familiar spellings. The very earliest, from the late c16, simply depict the Bahama Islands / Lucayas as rather random-looking blobs which bear little relation to their actual geographical location or their shape. I don’t have access to written archival material, so I looked instead at historic maps of the Caribbean / Bahamas / Lucayas. I started by trying to establish the earliest map, and the earliest mention of Hole-in-the-Wall. If you are interested in the story and close- up photos, you’ll find them at HITW UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES ONE (past) and TWO(present & future). In 2015 I went on the BMMRO research RHIB close to the hole / gap. There are links at the bottom of the page to some posts relating to the new ‘Gap-in-the-Wall’. It was written, of course, before Hurricane Sandy converted the Hole into a Gap. STOP PRESS March 2017 Thanks to the many people currently viewing this post & sharing it around. This picture inspired me to delve into the history of Abaco and its the southernmost extremity, to see how far back it can be traced and how the island’s recorded history has evolved since the Columbian era. To begin with, here is a fabulous recent photograph of the actual Hole-in-the-Wall taken by well-known Abaco nature tour guide Ricky Johnson. He and his brother Edgar - both born with albinism - were both renowned musicians. He burst onto the world blues scene in the 1960s, dazzling crowds with his fast licks while his trademark long, white hair flew about from under his cowboy hat. John Dawson Winter III was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas. They said it was clear that both Johnny and Susan Winter wanted Nelson to be responsible for Johnny Winter’s music and legacy. “I’m a bluesman.” From his earliest childhood in the Mississippi Delta and Beaumont, Texas to his last breath, touring on the road, Winter truly lived up to that statement in every sense of the word.“The Plaintiffs orchestrated the wrongful termination of Paul Nelson during a difficult time in Susan Winter’s last year of life,” the Nelsons said in a statement released by their lawyer, Matthew Mason. “I’m not a rock n roller,” Winter told American Blues Scene. Winter earned several Grammy nominations for his searing, scorching slide guitar work, and was inducted into the Blues Foundation’s Blues Hall of Fame in 2003, and was one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitar Players of All Time. Winter would go on to produce several Grammy-winning albums for Muddy before the bluesman’s death in 1983. He made a successful comeback, culminating in what Winter described to American Blues Scene Magazine as the “highlight of my life” when, after the closing of Chess Records, he brought Muddy Waters to the studio to record what would widely become known as the bluesman’s comeback record, Hard Again. In the album, Winter performed most of the guitar work, while Muddy sang. His first album with Columbia was Johnny Winter, with Willie Dixon playing stand up bass. Winter continued to gain widespread critical acclaim with his innovative blues stylings and in 1970, Winter released his commercially acclaimed “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo”, before struggling with heroin addiction for several years, seeking treatment, and emerging with a renewed lease on life. In 1968, he released his first album, The Progressive Blues Experiment, and after a now-famous performance at The Fillmore East, he was signed to Columbia Records with what was reported to be the largest advance ever made to an artist.Īfter his mammoth deal, Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues, according to his official biography, which was a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues through the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. From before his teens, Winter was playing and recording, even sitting in with the biggest blues legends of the day and in history, including Muddy Waters and BB King.
